PILOTS are invited to fly over a sculpture to be unveiled at an East Yorkshire school to commemorate those who have fallen in conflict since the First World War.
The 50-foot design of a poppy with the words "Lest We Forget", will be created out of hundreds of cardboard poppies, and placed on the field at Goole Academy on Saturday, November 8.
The school has invited pilots to fly over and dip their wings out of respect to the fallen, as the ceremony will coincide with Waggle Your Wings Day, supported by the Royal British Legion.
Jack Milnes is project manager of the school's Spirit of Goole scheme, which will see a fully functional bi-plane built by pupils, and urged pedestrians as well as pilots to visit the ceremony.
He said: "We feel this would be a great way to mark the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, as well as remembering all those who have lost their lives fighting in conflicts since.
"We would love to see as many people as possible come to view the sculpture on the school field between dawn and 5pm and I have already put out an invite to the flying fraternity, including the RAF, to take part."
Volunteers are also needed to help create the cardboard poppies. To find out more email jackmilnes@thespiritofgoole.co.uk or phone 01405 768621, extension 345.
