WHEN City of York Council closed Vyner Street and Fountayne Street to through traffic it created a necessary evil in the form of a bottleneck junction of Haxby and Wigginton Roads and Clarence Street, forcing people to queue down to the lights to come back up the other side.
It was necessary because of the volume of traffic travelling down these residential streets reduced in width by parked cars creating a very dangerous situation, especially for families with children.
The evil is the time and fuel wastage in the queuing and, more importantly, the concentrated levels of pollution created in the vicinity of the hospital.
Then the good news, the possibility of a link road through the Nestlé Rowntree site which would greatly alleviate the afore-mentioned problems.
Then the bad news: not for private cars.
In those famous words of John McEnroe: "You cannot be serious!"
It really is time to listen to the views of residents on this and many other issues.
