FINANCE giant Norwich Union is moving 150 call centre jobs from India back to Britain - but workers in York will not be affected.

James Evans, director of media relations for the company, confirmed a report by a national newspaper that jobs in home insurance claims were being moved back to the UK.

The move will mean that customers phoning with a claim will now have their first call dealt with in Britain rather than in India.

But Mr Evans said the decision to move the jobs back to Britain would not affect 450 job losses announced at Norwich Union's York branch in September.

"There is no change for York," he said.

Job losses in the city are part of a package of 4,000 redundancies across the country - of which a quarter are going to India and another 500 in IT are being moved to other suppliers.

Mr Evans said the company planned to have 7,800 roles in India by the end of this year, and was still on track to achieve that.

But the firm admitted there had been some "cultural differences" in the handling of home insurance claims in India, and that was why these jobs were being moved back to Britain.

"This is one particular area that we felt after feedback could be done better," said Mr Evans.

The move could have a positive effect on redundancies in some parts of the country, he added - Norwich possibly being one. Other areas of the company's Indian operation were going very well, he added.
