A SERIES of films about the First World War are being screened in York to mark the 100th anniversary of the war's beginning.
Until November 24 the York’s Alternative History Society (YAH), York City Screen Picturehouse cinema and Explore York Libraries and Archives present a critical perspective on 2the war to end all wars" through a series of films and an exhibition of pop-up banners and maps.
The films offer a wide range of perspectives on the effects of war and will be supported by short introductory talks by York’s Alternative History Group.
Explore York Libraries and Archives has produced a pop-up exhibition, as part of the York: Gateway to History project which has been supported with a £1.5 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant. The exhibition reveals the effect of the war on York’s citizens and how local soldiers were honoured and remembered.
Fiona Williams, Chief Executive of Explore York Libraries and Archives said: “We’re thrilled to be working with York’s Alternative History exploring a different angle on the First World War. Over the next four years, Explore will look at all aspects of the war. The City Archives provide us with a very local perspective on such a significant event in our history. From 2015 our archive collections will be accessible to the public, allowing more people to share history in new and exciting ways’
The film series begins on Sunday, October 19 at 5pm with "Le Grande Illusion" - a portrait of prisoners of war attempting to escape. More details and tickets are available at the City Screen website picturehouses.co.uk/cinema/york_picturehouse
