IN contrast to moneybags' Fulham York City's current squad cost just £50,000 to assemble - less than the fee the Cottagers shelled out to Conference club Woking for utility player Kevin Betsy.

Alan Fettis
Goalkeeper: Age 32.
Born: Newtonards, Northern Ireland.
Previous clubs: Ards, Hull City, WBA (loan), Nottingham Forest, Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City (loan).
Signed: March 2000 – £50,000.
Debut: v Peterborough (away) March 4, 2000.
A clean sweep of the Player of the Year awards in 2000-01 says it all.
Northern Ireland international Fettis’ form was so impressive last season he was put on stand-by for the Northern Ireland World Cup qualifiers this summer. Still excelling as City’s number one.

Russ Howarth
Goalkeeper:
Age 21.
Born: York.
Previous clubs: None.
Signed: former youth trainee.
Debut: v Swansea City (home) August 7, 1999.
Capped by England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under 18 level, Howarth represented Leeds United in a six-a-side tournament in Singapore in summer 2000.
Alan Fettis’ superb form means his chances were limited during 2000-01 but the youngster is pushing hard for the No 1 spot.

Mike Basham
Centre-back: Age 29.
Born: Barking.
Previous clubs: West Ham, Colchester (loan), Swansea, Peterborough, Barnet.
Signed: March 2001.
Debut: v Plymouth (away) March 31, 2001.
Arrived towards the end of last season on loan from Barnet. A big centre-half in the traditional mould, he is an excellent distributor of the ball.
Has been prone to errors at key times. But on form he is a very imposing figure.

Richard Cooper
Full back: Age 21.
Born: Nottingham.
Previous clubs: Nottingham Forest.
Signed: February 2001.
Debut: v Plymouth (home) March 3, 2001.
Right-back with bags of potential who joined City after a spell on loan from Nottingham Forest. Has become a fans’ favourite with his terrier-like attitude.

Matt Hocking
Right-back/centre-back: Age 23.
Born: Boston.
Previous clubs: Sheffield United, Hull City.
Signed: March 1999.
Debut: v Chesterfield (home) April 3, 1999.
Arguably City’s most improved player of last season. Started this term strongly but has found himself under pressure in tandem with the rest of the central corps.

Darren Edmondson
Wing-back: Age 30.
Born: Coniston.
Previous clubs: Carlisle United, Huddersfield Town, Plymouth Argyle (loan).
Signed: March 2000.
Debut: v Hartlepool (home) April 1, 2000.
Signed by Terry Dolan on the eve of transfer deadline day from Huddersfield Town on a short-term contract, Edmondson signed a new two-year deal at the start of last season.
Ever eager to get forward whenever possible as part of City’s wing-back formation.

Graham Potter
Wing-back: Age 26.
Born: Solihull.
Previous clubs: Birmingham City, Wycombe Wanderers (loan), Stoke City, Southampton, WBA, Northampton Town (loan).
Signed: July 2000.
Debut: v Chesterfield (away) August 12, 2000.
Former England Under-21 international who was Dolan’s first signing of summer 2000 to provide competition for the left-back spot.
Feted for scoring the last-minute goal direct from a corner at Torquay which guaranteed City’s League status last season, Potter remains one of City’s best players going forward.

Gary Hobson
Centre-back/left-back: Age 29.
Born: North Ferriby.
Previous clubs: Hull City, Brighton, Chester City.
Signed: July 2000.
Debut: v Chesterfield (away) August 12, 2000.
Signed on a free last summer. Hobson is well known to City chief Terry Dolan having played for him at Hull but his time at Bootham Crescent has been hampered by injury.

Chris Smith
Centre-back: Age 20.
Born: Derby.
Previous clubs: Reading.
Signed: June 2001.
Debut: v Exeter (home) October 6, 2001.
Came for a trial at the end of last season and did enough in a couple of reserve team outings to persuade Terry Dolan to sign him on a two-year deal from Reading.

Neville Stamp
Left-back: Age 20.
Born: Reading.
Previous clubs: Reading.
Signed: October 2000.
Debut: v Southend (away) October 14, 2000.
After an impressive trial period at the start of last season was offered a one-year deal. His appearances were limited but had his contract lengthened by another year this summer. Still yet to threaten Graham Potter’s hold on left-side role.

Chris Brass
Midfield/centre-back: Age 26.
Born: Easington.
Previous clubs: Burnley, Torquay United (loan).
Signed: March 2001.
Debut: v Lincoln City (home) March 17, 2001.
Securing Brass from First Division Burnley was a major coup for City. Equally comfortable in midfield or defence, he is a born leader and as skipper for the current season has been inspirational.

Christian Fox
Midfield: Age 20.
Born: Aberdeen.
Previous clubs: None.
Signed: former youth trainee.
Debut: v Wigan (away) August 24, 1999.
A member of the England Under-16 squad, the highly-rated teenager signed a new two-year deal in summer 2000 but last season was a virtual write-off as he was laid low by a knee injury which later required major surgery.

Now pushing for a first-team recall.

Lee Bullock
Midfield: Age 20.
Born: Stockton.
Previous clubs: None.
Signed: former youth trainee.
Debut: v Wrexham (away) December 5, 1998.
After a promising first year in the professional ranks, Bullock was handed a two-year extension to his contract in summer 2000.
Gradually fulfilling his undoubted potential as a midfield goal-getter and already has five goals to his credit this term.

Nick Richardson
Midfield: 34.
Born: Halifax.
Previous clubs: Halifax, Cardiff, Wrexham (loan), Bury, Chester
Signed: February 2001.
Debut: v Exeter (home) February 17, 2001.Along with Peter Duffield the most experienced of the City ranks.
But while perhaps anticipating a bit part, Richardson has already seen regular action of late as injuries continue to take a chunk out of the midfield.

Never less than 100 per cent committed when wearing the red shirt.

Michael Proctor
Striker: Age 21.
Born: Sunderland.
Previous clubs: Sunderland.
Signed: August 2001.
Debut: v Rushden & Diamonds (home), August 11, 2001.
Initially arrived on a short loan spell from Sunderland, where he has come through the youth ranks.
The youngster has proved a big hit in partnership with lee Nogan up front, so much so that City moved quickly to extend his loan spell for the rest of the season.
He and Nogan have linked well both sharing 16 goals between them.
Proctor is a fine finisher and his flair was sharply shown with a contender for goal of the season at Lincoln City.

Lee Nogan
Striker: Age 32.
Born: Cardiff.
Previous clubs: Oxford United, Brentford (loan), Southend United (loan), Watford, Reading, Notts County (loan), Grimsby Town, Darlington.
Signed: February 2001.
Debut: v Exeter (home) February 17, 2001.
Maybe reaching the veteran stage of his career but Nogan has lost none of his willingness to run and run all day.
Tireless in leading from the front, he may not always get the plaudits accorded to Proctor, but his sheer industry and no little skill provides a cutting complement to his younger strike partner.
Nogan is not just a run-all-day merchant, although he must cover several miles each match. Had he not weighed in with his fair share of goals, City’s League plight would have been even more parlous.

Peter Duffield
Striker: Age 34.
Born: Middlesbrough.
Previous clubs: Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Halifax (loan), Rotherham (loan), Blackpool (loan), Bournemouth (loan), Stockport (loan), Crewe Alexandra (loan), Hamilton Academicals, Airdrie, Raith Rovers, Darlington.
Signed: June 2000.
Debut: v Chesterfield (away) August 12, 2000.
The unluckiest player on City’s books.
His first season with the club was but a few weeks old when he broke his leg, typically chasing a possible opening. Then eight months into his recovery he suffers another cruel break, this time in a training accident.
However, Duffield has manfully fought back again and with injuries and illness decimating the squad in the build-up to Saturday’s cup-tie he could find himself back in the thick of potential giant-killing action.

Mark Maley
Defender: Age 20.
Born: Newcastle.
Previous clubs: Sunderland.
Signed: September 2001.
Debut: v Lincoln City (away) September 29, 2001.
Resolute defender, who has followed the route piloted by front-man Michael Proctor from Sunderland’s Black Cats to City’s Bootham Crescent.
Maley has even followed the same loan route with the 20-year-old attached to City for the rest of the season, but it is fair to say he has not enjoyed the same impact as his Wearside team-mate.

Alex Mathie
Striker: Age 33.
Born: Bathgate.
Previous clubs: Celtic, Morton, Port Vale (loan), Newcastle United, Ipswich Town, Dundee United.
Signed: November 2000.
Debut: v Hartlepool (away) November 30, 2000.
Classy performer, but rarely seen so far due to a combination of injury, illness and occasional drifting out of form since his arrival at Bootham Crescent.
However, former Ipswich Town ace Mathie, who figured in midweek against Rochdale. has the ability to produce the magic needed to inflict an FA Cup knockout-blow.
