SEVERE delays are expected as roadworks on the A64 restart next week.

The project, to create a £4.1 million junction and underpass at Copmanthorpe, was put on hold for two-and-a-half weeks over Christmas to ease disruption.

But it will resume on January 5.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "When we restart we will be switching work to the westbound carriageway, which will be closed to traffic.

"A single lane contraflow and 50 miles per hour speed limit will be in operation on the eastbound carriageway.

"Drivers are warned to expect severe delays at peak times and to allow extra time for their journey, car share or use public transport."

The junction being replaced was formerly controlled by traffic lights and was the top accident blackspot in North Yorkshire.

The spokesman said: "We are aware that many people have been caught up in the delays and would like to assure everyone that our teams will continue to work seven days a week and through the night, where necessary in order to complete this major safety improvement work as quickly as possible."

The agency agreed to start contractors working on Sundays, and through the night when needed, after pressure from City of York Council and the Evening Press, which launched a campaign to Get York Moving.
