RESIDENTS who say their street is plagued by potholes and prone to flooding have called on council chiefs to take action.

People living in South Lane, in Haxby, York, said frequent deliveries by lorries to the nearby Somerfield supermarket have caused damage to the road.

Now they are calling for City of York Council to resurface the road properly, which they claim has not been done for up to 20 years.

Bryony Wareham, 19, a student, who lives on the road with her grandparents, said: "It is in an absolutely horrendous condition and the only thing the council do is fill in potholes. My suspension broke because it was continuously up and down the road and it is in an absolutely terrible state."

Bryony said the road was now sloped because of the continuous wear-and-tear of wagons parking to deliver to the supermarket.

She said: "Water collects in the road and goes straight over the wall into the garden. The drains cannot handle the water and we have complained to the council many times.

"The road is in a dreadful state, it floods people's gardens in the rainy weather and dirt from the road covers any car that is in a driveway. I do not think it has been resurfaced for about 20 years.

"The council has said it is going to get done next year but they have been saying that for the last five years and still it has not been done."

Her grandmother, Angela Walker, 69, has lived in the road for 45 years but said she had never seen the road in a worse condition.

She said: "The road is in a very bad state. When it rains, it floods quite badly and the water comes down my drive."

A spokeswoman for City of York Council said: "Each year, we assess the condition of every part of the highway network. Roads are given a rating based on a number of factors, including their condition, safety and usage.

"Those that are assessed as being in the poorest condition are given priority when we consider the highway maintenance programme for the coming year. South Lane, in Haxby, was assessed as being in average condition and is, therefore, not among those likely to be resurfaced in the coming year.

"However, we can arrange for the road to be inspected again to see if any repairs need to be carried out to the existing road surface."

No one from Somerfield was available to comment.
