YORK students are preparing to send a rubber duck into space to capture unique footage and scientific data.
Members of the University of York’s Astronomy Society plan to elevate Astroduck into the upper atmosphere with a professional weather balloon.
It is set to acquire scientific data such as altitude, temperature and air pressure as well as valuable footage to record the flight from launch to landing.
The students pitching the idea through the University’s YuStart scheme, a crowdfunding initiative where sponsors can pledge money to support new research and business ideas, and exceeded their target of £1,000.
The money will pay for equipment including a GoPro camera, GPS trackers and a blackbox, in addition to a weather balloon, helium and a parachute for the duck’s soft landing after the mission.
Student Adam Shore said the first launch would hopefully happen from Heslington East during the University's Science Week next week.
