ANYONE who uses York's outer ring road will tell you it's no longer fit for purpose. And that's on a good day.
Snarl ups affect most of the roundabouts, most of the time; rush hour on the ring road couldn't be more of a misnomer and it becomes even more of a car park when an accident blocks the A64.
Something needs to be done. The Government says it wants to create a northern powerhouse by awarding increased powers and investment to connect Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield, but if York is to avoid missing out, the ring road must become a dual carriageway.
Businesses have been asking for it for years, now the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) chair, Barry Dodd, is calling on the Prime Minister to invest in this urgently required upgrade programme.
We agree. Since the Scottish referendum there has been much talk of devolution to the regions and with London acting almost like a different country, it's high time the Government invested taxpayers' money more equitably, especially on infrastructure.
A dual carriageway ringing York is long overdue and vital for the city's future wealth creation. How it will be financed does concern us, but isn't that precisely what LEPs were set up for?
We wish Mr Dodd every success in convincing the PM to do the right thing by York.
