EXTENDED Park&Ride services will take place during the Christmas period, with free boxing day travel in York.

City of York Council have organised buses from 7am on Boxing Day from Askham Bar, the Designer Outlet and Monks Cross which will run for free.

Later travel will run on all six Park&Ride routes every Thursday from next week, with last buses leaving the city centre at about 9.30pm, so shoppers can take advantage of late-night opening and the St Nicholas Fair, which starts on November 27.

Councillor David Levene, cabinet member for transport, said: "Like last year, we hope that the initiative will help our city centre economy on the build up to Christmas and kick start the sale season, encouraging even more shoppers to come to York."

Frank Wood, chair of the Retail Forum, said: "This will support visitors to York who will, after the delights, stresses and strains of Christmas Day, be able to relax with some retail therapy in the superb shopping destination of York. The extension to the late night shopping days will help to revitalise the use of shopping in the evening allowing the whole family to take part."
