A man had to be rescued from the River Ouse in York on Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters using their water rescue boat took the 35-year-old out of the water and brought him to the bank safely.
He was suffering from hypothermia and received medical treatment on the bank, but he was not believed to be in a life-threatening condition. An ambulance crew took him to hospital.
North Yorkshire Police this morning said the man had told officers that he had fallen into the water, however they said a witness had told them that he jumped in and appeared to be trying to swim across the river.
The drama began shortly after 4.30pm near Lendal Bridge. It is the latest in a series of incidents in the past year, some fatal, when people have ended up in the rivers in or near the centre of York.
