D WARDELL may be correct in asserting that Bishopthorpe Road is not what it was in the Fifties (Letters, November 13).
But against stiff competition from the city centre and supermarkets, the revival and unique character of the street is a tribute to the strength of the community in Clementhorpe and South Bank and the hard work of the traders.
Anyone looking for clues as to how this has been achieved would do well to read the excellent article in last week’s Press concerning the campaign for a living wage.
Two of the Bishy Road traders described the skills that are needed to serve customers effectively. Given that they are in the highly competitive retail sector, it was good to hear that they are rewarding the loyalty and skill of their staff with a commitment to pay the Living Wage.
Their major rival that has recently issued a profits warning might well learn from this.
There is no future in the UK for a low wage/low skills economy.
