SPORTY pupils are celebrating after a new outdoor games area was built in their award-winning school.
St Wilfrid’s RC Primary School landed a £30,000 grant from Sport England to install the exciting new, all-weather equipment.
To qualify for the funding the city centre school had to prove it did lots of sport, despite the fact it doesn’t have a field.
The Monkgate pupils had no problems showing they loved being active. They scooped the Active School of the Year award at the York Sport Awards back in April at the University of York.
Head teacher Jane Conway said children were delighted with the latest addition to the playground, which includes goals, basketball nets, a host of targets and a separate traversing wall. It was installed over the October half-term by Playscheme.
She said: “The Sport England grant has helped us to develop the limited space we do have in a really exciting way.
“We have a fantastic sports leader in school and I’m sure pupils will make the most of the new facilities.”
