ON NOVEMBER 10, I attended a performance of The Nutcracker at York Barbican by The Russian State Ballet and Opera Theatre of Komi.
This was my first experience of ballet and I hoped for a good night. I was not disappointed. It was a magical evening and a performance of the highest quality. The Barbican was around half full for a company that deserved a much larger audience.
The dancers displayed tremendous athleticism and skill. They were accompanied by a small orchestra who were tremendous. I particularly enjoyed the keyboards.
Just when you thought you had heard the best, another favourite song was played as the show moved to its climax.
For me, one of the highlights was when it started to snow on stage, a beautiful moment as it slowly drifted down.
The end came far too soon, but that is always a good sign. It was a great show, well worth the an evening out to watch them if you get chance.
Their next local performance is Swan Lake at Scarborough on November 30.
