YORK’S Christmas lights will be switched on by the Lord Mayor of York and his four grandchildren on Thursday.
Cllr Ian Gillies will also be joined in St Helen’s Square by funny-man Martin Barrass and much-loved baddie David Leonard, from York Theatre Royal’s pantomime, Old Mother Goose.
The event gets under way at 5.30pm, when The University of York Brass Band will play Christmas carols and favourite Christmas music in the square, with the St Leonard’s Hospice Christmas tree lights due to be officially switched on at about 6.15pm.
The band will continue playing and local choirs, including Haxby Road Academy, Supersingers and York Music Centre Girls Chamber Choir, will sing around the city throughout the evening.
Meanwhile, in the Coppergate Shopping Centre, a magical, musical Christmas tree is coming alive each hour and, on receipt of a donation, is playing music and changing colours to raise money for York-based charity, Jessie’s Fund.
Gillygate will be transformed by the Gillygate Traders association into ‘Jollygate’ between 5pm and 8pm on Thursday, December 11.
