AFTER reading letters to The Press over the past 40 years about the traffic in York, the situation is caused by too many traffic lights.
The council still insist on wasting thousands of pounds on these so-called traffic management companies.
A prime example is the Hopgrove roundabout, where £11m was spent to speed the traffic up, just to install traffic lights and slow it down again.
Grimston Bar is another example. All the people that use the roads in York have repeatedly told the council when the lights aren’t working the traffic flows smoothly.
Now the council is proposing to spend £300,000 on altering Clarence Street from Lord Mayor’s Walk to Wigginton Road.
Unless the traffic lights are replaced with mini-roundabouts, the problem is still going to be there.
Some 90 per cent of the junctions in York could be replaced with roundabouts.
The same applies to pedestrian crossings, the zebra crossing worked perfectly well.
There’s nothing more frustrating to see a pedestrian press the button, see the road is clear then walk across, clearing the road just in time for the light to change to red. Then the driver has to wait for the lights to change back.
