NEW figures show that people in East Riding of Yorkshire have recycled a record amount in their blue kerbside bins.
In September, more than 3,000 tonnes of recycling were collected, the highest figure ever in one month.
The figure represents an increase of around 18 per cent over the same month last year and an increase of over 17 per cent on August this year.
East Riding residents can recycle a range of items in their blue bins, including newspapers, magazines, junk mail, and all types of cardboard including greetings cards, books, shredded paper, envelopes and clean beverage cartons.
The bins can also be used for items including clear and coloured plastic bottles, clean yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, steel and aluminium cans, empty aerosol cans, glass bottles and jars.
Cllr Symon Fraser, portfolio holder environment, housing and planning, said: “I am delighted by the response from our residents to the need to recycle, and especially pleased by these latest record figures.
“We are aiming even higher with our recycling rates in the East Riding and I am sure, that given the fantastic response so far, we will achieve even greater success.”
