Eggborough Ospreys are making a challenge for one of the top two spots in Selby Fasprint Table Tennis League division one following their efforts to reduce their back-log of fixtures.

They are now sitting second with a game in hand over leaders Eggborough Kestrels. Martin Hood and Keith Webster were undefeated for Kites in their 7-3 win over Ospreys on two occasions.

This, however, must have acted as a spur for Ospreys as they then beat Tate and Lyle A' 9-1, with captain Pete Harpham and Dave Jackson winning three sets each, Andy Kirk preventing the whitewash, and repeated the score against Womersley, who saved their whitewash with a doubles win.

Tate and Lyle A' got points against Eggborough Kites with a 7-3 win, Alan Neil excelling with all three sets, assisted by captain Kirk and Keith Beedham with two each.

Selby Working Men's Club are facing a play-off to maintain division one status as they lost 7-3 to Eggborough Eagles.

Captain Roger Ellis won two for the home team, but Eagles' Paul Dykes won three, assisted by two sets each from captain Ian McKenna and James Atkins. Atkins only lost to the experienced Ellis on deuce in game five, which shows the advances this young player is making.

Division two leaders Eggborough Merlins drew 5-5 with Thorpe Cobras in a table-topping fixture.

The result disappointed the visitors, who arrived with their strongest team trying to inflict Merlins' first defeat of the season.

Merlins captain John Halliday, Thorpe captain Steve Taylor and team-mate Dave Little won two sets each.

Thorpe could still be in the play-off for the chance of division one status even if they do not overcome Merlins' 13-point advantage.
