WITH this album's second single, Starz In Their Eyes, reaching number two in the charts, Just Jack seems sure to be catapulted to commercial success.
Along with Writer's Block, that single is one of the unmistakable high-points of Overtones, Jack Allsopp's second album.
From the off, this ironic ode to a generation transfixed by celebrity culture has a catchy beat and neat melodic hooks.
The rest of the album follows similar themes, exploring modern British culture.
In Lost, for example, he probes the misdemeanours of an adulterous husband. Comparisons with The Streets are inevitable, but Jack Allsopp lacks the lyrical dexterity and razor-sharp observational wit of Mike Skinner.
His vocals also lack Skinner's bite and are backed by bouncy funk-jazz beats that at times shift worryingly into Jamiroquai territory.
But Just Jack always manages to bring it back.
