IN THIS Road Safety Week, I can recall devising and putting into use the “eight flash rule” which I used as a government-approved and licensed motorcycle instructor.
This is still to be adopted, but would reduce “Right Turn Other” type crashes and fatalities and it works for all speeds and roads, including when to start a signal on a motorway (remember there are no right turns on motorways) in the same way as does the two-second rule.
Fewer than eight flashes on the dashboard direction indicator repeater between you putting signal on and actually turning, and you’re indicating too late.
More than eight repeater flashes and you’re probably indicating too early for most roads and circumstances.
