PUPILS, staff, parents and governors of a North Yorkshire village primary school are celebrating after rising up the Ofsted rankings to outstanding.

Marton cum Grafton CE School was deemed outstanding in all areas during its recent inspection. The school was described as a "harmonious and happy learning environment" which is truly at the heart of the village. This recent inspection follows one in 2009 when the school was rated as "good".

Achievement and progress of pupils was outstanding, said inspectors, as was the quality of the teaching, pupils’ behaviour and early years’ provision. It was recognised that the curriculum is extensively enriched by music, sport, outdoor learning and visits and that pupils’ attitude to learning in lessons and throughout the school is exceptional.

The inspector was impressed with the relationships that staff have with pupils, resulting in a very positive climate for learning in all lessons which means that pupils learn and achieve exceptionally well during their time at school.

Leadership from the Head teacher, Marie-Louise Thirlaway was singled out for praise with inspectors saying the school is “expertly led and managed by the head teacher. There is a highly successful and shared vision of the pursuit of excellent teaching and high standards in all of the school’s work".

The work of the governors was highlighted as was the partnership with parents which was described as ‘exceptional’.

Chairman of governors, Alex Robinson, said: “This is an excellent commendation of everyone’s dedication to the school and we would like to thank Mrs Thirlaway and all her team for their hard work and commitment.”

Mrs Thirlaway said: “I am so proud of the children and staff. It really is a pleasure to lead such a fantastic team. We are lucky to work together with committed parents, conscientious and dedicated governors and a very supportive village community. Everybody works extremely hard and we are delighted that this has been recognised by OfSTED.”
