THESE compilations are never as much fun as the live shows, but this comes close. The true star turns belong to usual Jools sidekicks.
Ruby Turner, who always raises an audience, sets a lively ball rolling with Jumpin’ In The Morning, on which Mr Holland’s brass section has a blast. Ruby has another stand too with I Still Went Wrong, while support vocalists Louise Marshall and Mabel Ray put in turns too, with Mabel’s Sweet Bitter Love being a beautifully sung highlight.
The guests include Joss Stone, Emeli Sandé, a slightly weak Kylie on Should I Stay Or Should I Go, Laura Mvula doing a Nina Simone on See-Line Woman, Imelda Day shining on Top To Bottom Boogie and KT Tunstall excelling on Night And Day. Rumer disappoints, as always to these ears, on Lost Mind. Two surprising resurrections: Amy Whitehouse on Monkey Man, great fun, and Eartha Kitt singing Ain’t Misbehavin’ – just in time for the panto season.
