A SHOPPING frenzy is predicted to begin in York today as Christmas shoppers buy into America’s “Black Friday” craze.
Outlets including McArthurGlen and John Lewis are among the retailers predicting record-breaking sales on what is being hyped nationally as the biggest shopping day of the year.
Christmas shoppers are also expected to flock to St Nicholas Fayre in York over the next few weeks. The event was launched yesterday and is due to run until December 21. Yesterday, on the first day, the award for the best-dressed stand went to Paula Snowdon from Millies Designs.
Paula, who can usually be found in Shambles Market on Saturdays and Sundays, is launching a new range of decorations and chic gifts at the fayre.
More than 60 chalets selling produce, crafts, gifts and festive decorations will open every day from 9am to 6pm, with stallholders dressed in Dickensian costume. The best -dressed trader will be judged at the end of the event.
Late night shopping will be available on Thursdays until 8pm.
Cllr Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “For the first time in its 24-year history this magical fair is extended to over three weeks, giving residents and visitors plenty of opportunities to come and sample its delights.”
John Lewis, which has a shop at York’s Vangarde shopping park, has said it has a range of deals to match other Black Friday offers and extended opening times.
Gary Rowntree, branch manager of John Lewis York, said: “We have carefully planned for this year’s Black Friday.
“We are going to be opening the branch at 8am in preparation for customers looking for an early deal and we have more staff in place to help support customer demand.
“The huge range of specially-curated deals in our electricals and technology departments, combined with our never knowingly undersold price promise, means that John Lewis should be the number one destination for shoppers this year. I am looking forward to what Black Friday will bring.”
McArthurGlen’s York Designer Outlet has said it expects nearly 60,000 shoppers this weekend, the first time it has made Black Friday reductions.
Mike Thomas, centre manager, said: “Due to popular demand we are offering our customers the best start to their Christmas shopping this weekend with a series of Black Friday promotions running all weekend.
“We are expecting Black Friday weekend to deliver record-breaking sales for the centre and look forward to ensuring shoppers get into the festive spirit and take advantage of the fantastic offers available.”
