ONE York school’s festive production was far from just another Winter’s Tale thanks to the addition of some un-ewe-sual extras.

Drama students at Bootham School performed with Unity, Alysia and Ultimate Teddy, three rare breed sheep who joined the cast of Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale for two nights.

The school’s Autumn term grand production was performed on Tuesday and Wednesday in the theatre in front of parents, friends, family and invited guests. The sheep had spent the past week living in one of the school’s boarding house gardens.

Head of drama, Simon Benson, made the surprise announcement to the cast before a dress rehearsal. He said: “I just explained to everyone that if you come into contact with them please remember to wash your hands.

“The play was composed around 1610-11; The Winter’s Tale is one of Shakespeare’s final plays. Often categorised as a romance or tragicomedy, danger, death and the power of evil are ever-present forces in the play – right up to the final scene. The production was an excellent evening’s entertainment.”
