DISCO Mister, the York pop duo behind the Bring It Home World Cup internet hit, are now dreaming of a Christmas number one.
Huntington School teachers Robin Parmiter and Ian Wilson hope to round off a whirlwind year with their new single after their football anthem become Amazon’s most downloaded World Cup 2014 song.
Disco Mister first hit the headlines double act when Bring It Home won support from celebrities like Clare Balding and Miranda Hart, and endured longer than the England team in the tournament. It also raised money for the Ann Maguire Educational Fund and The Bobby Moore Fund.
The pair’s festive offering, Everybody Dance (Happy Christmas), complete with a video, was made without a budget, with the filming done by colleague Karl Elwell, with production support from Lili Brewin, in a day around North Yorkshire.
They are now vying for the coveted Christmas top spot against contenders such as BandAid 30 and the X-Factor winner.
“We want people to celebrate and party with us, and what bigger party is there than Christmas time?” said Ian, a music teacher. “It’s a big challenge trying to ignore the clichés and create something new for Christmas so we’ve focussed on making a song that gets people dancing and gets them even more excited for the holidays.
“We hope the video makes people smile and captures a bit of the mystery of the season. It ends on a question – and we’d love to hear people’s answers.” Philosophy teacher Robin added: “It’s reminding everybody of the magic and mystery of the season.”
Proceeds from the sale of the song will go to the Build A School in Africa charity, which was set up by York-based Webcertain, to help with building and equipping a school in a deprived village in Western Kenya..
Robin said: “We want to raise money that supports education for people who desperately want it, and need it. People may grumble about schools in this country sometimes, but we’re so privileged really. This money will help a community fight poverty for themselves.”
Everybody Dance, distributed through Band Crusade, can be pre-ordered on iTunes, Amazon and major digital retailers, and goes on sale on December 15.
