I WONDER how many people who visited the Terry’s factory plans exhibition liked the proposal to convert the landmark clock tower to residential use.
Putting flats in it will require the insertion of several new floors to accommodate the right number of units.
New windows will have to be created, and some existing windows altered, so the flats are provided with light and a view of the outside world.
Originally, the listed tower was intended to house the famous clock and to serve as the factory water tower. Converting it to residential use will not only contradict its functional character but also alter its appearance.
There is an alternative suggestion for its future, that there should be a shop on the ground floor which could be associated with the new chocolate factory next door. Above could be the proposed restaurant and café bar.
The clock, identified as the second most important of its type in the country, is to be restored so its workings will require space. And higher up, a public viewing point is suggested from which the history and topography of Terry’s site, the racecourse and Knavesmire would be explained.
There must be many former Terry’s employees who would love to see the tower made available to the wider community and not just those who can afford to live in it.
