A NUMBER of GP surgeries in York and North Yorkshire face urgent inspections after regulators found they could be at risk of breaching care standards.
Health watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has banded almost every GP surgery in England as part of an ‘intelligent monitoring’ database that allows patients to see which practices are highest on its list of priority for inspections.
Surgeries are rated from one to six in terms of apparent risk of providing poor care - one being the highest risk.
In York, North Yorkshire and the East Riding, the vast majority of GP surgeries are banded at five or six and of low concern, with three surgeries considered to be of concern.
Wenlock Terrace Surgery in York has been put in band two and Terrington Surgery and a surgery in Tennyson Avenue in Scarborough, band one. They will be prioritised for inspection from next year.
Wenlock Terrace Surgery in Fulford, is run by Unity Health which also has surgeries at the university and in Hull Road.
The CQC said signs of "elevated risk" are the number of women attending a cervical screening test in the last five years and the low number of diabetic patients to have had a flu jab. It also identified a risk in the low uptake of the flu jab.
A spokeswoman for Unity Health said it has a high proportion of young and transient patients, and as with many other university centres is often rated poorly simply due to its patient list.
She said: "Out of context the CQC banding is confusing to patients and frustrating for staff whose focus is to develop and maintain a good quality health care experience for all our patients.
"In September 2013, the CQC routinely inspected Unity Health and the Practice was judged to have fully met CQC standards and is compliant with the regulations."
At Terrington Surgery, patient feedback between July 2013 and March 2014 indicated an "elevated risk", when patients were asked about their involvement in decisions and the extent to which they were treated with care and concern on their last visit.
Concerns were also flagged up with the satisfaction over their overall experience at the surgery, how easy it is to get through on the phone, opening hours and being able to see or speak with the GP they prefer.
Terrington Surgery has previously been in the news after its former GP Dr Elizabeth Bradley was subject to an investigation over her misdiagnosis of a cancer patient and it was found her fitness to practise was impaired.
The Terrington surgery was taken over by doctors from Helmsley Surgery in the summer of 2013.
Heather White, the practice manager for the group, said the practice had been overhauled and was now benefitting from a larger team of experienced clinicians providing a better skill mix and would welcome a CQC inspection. She added an official survey had shown positive patient feedback, "We are at a loss to know where this feedback is coming from."
While CQC has emphasised the number rating not a judgement on the service, the analysis indicates what services appear to be doing well, alongside where people may not be receiving high-quality and compassionate care.
The analysis reveals that almost eight out of ten general practices in England appear to be of low concern, based on the available data and almost 3,800 are in the lowest category.
Within the next two years, CQC will have inspected and rated every general practice in England as Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate.
