A TRADITIONAL Swedish celebration will be staged York Minster in all its candle-lit glory later this month.
The 90-minute special service, Sankta Lucia: Festival of Light, starts at 7.30pm on Wednesday December 17, with free admission, and is part of the cathedral’s packed programme for Advent and Christmas.
It marks the feast of Saint Lucy – Sankta Lucia – who brings light into the depths of winter, and involves a procession led by a young girl wearing a crown of candles – the flame from which is then used to light hundreds of candles around the cathedral, creating a stunning setting for the Swedish carols and songs.
Canon Peter Moger, Precentor of the Minster, said York had strong historic links with Scandinavia, with the land on which the cathedral stood gifted to the Chapter of York by a Viking lord, so he was delighted the celebration was being staged there.
Meanwhile, the cathedral has staged another spectacular candlelit service with its Advent Procession on Sunday evening.
