CITY of York Council has warned of a spate of unsolicited and potentially fraudulent calls to residents from someone purporting to be from the authority.
The caller, who withholds their number, claims to be from “York City Council”, said a spokeswoman. “Most calls appear to be from men who say they are aware that someone in the household has been in an accident or has witnessed an accident and that this could give rise to a claim,” she said.
“He has, in one call, claimed to be ringing from the council on behalf of the NHS. When questioned about the authenticity of the call, the caller puts the phone down.”
She said such a caller was not from the council and could be trying to obtain personal information for fraudulent purposes or to pass it to a third party, who might misuse any facts shared.
Anyone receiving such a call is asked to ring the Citizens Advice Bureau on 03454 040506, which will record any complaints and pass the information to trading standards for investigation.
