IT'S nearly pantomime season, but we've been witnessing a series of yes they will, no they won'ts for months now over IVF treatment.
The NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has spent a year of indecision. First it said couples in York would be able to access fertility treatment on the NHS; then in August the CCG backtracked, saying it would cost too much. Now apparently it won't and the green light is on once again.
The CCG has not acquitted itself well in this matter. York has been the only area in the country not to provide a single cycle of the treatment and it's year long U-turns will have caused unwarranted distress to couples who already have enough to worry about.
Nearly 1,000 people signed a petition against this postcode lottery by calling on York to bring its policy in line with the rest of the UK. Now it appears health chiefs have finally listened.
While it is good that they have changed their minds, we agree with York Outer MP Julian Sturdy who says bearing in mind the CCG's track record regarding fertility treatment on the NHS, he is treating the news with some caution.
Let's just hope this proves to be the final decision.
