I ALMOST choked on my porridge on reading the stupid plans to turn St Joseph’s Convent, also known as Poor Clare’s, into yet more student flats. Many such flats are in progress on The Press and Vardy’s old sites – do we really need any more in this area?
I also understand that the flats built on the Northern Dairies land still have vacancies. I read further that the architects for the convent scheme hope to retain some of the orchard.
Several years ago, my late wife and I were shown round the gardens, which are a haven for birds and wildlife and also includes a graveyard, where for many years departed nuns were laid to rest. I implore the council’s planning department to put the application into the recycling bin where it belongs.
