IN LAST Saturday’s paper you reported that the council was finally holding consultations about the Community Stadium.
With less than an hour to go, I rushed to the offices to see it. There were no councillors present, but I was able to talk to the architect and a person from GLL. Showing surprise that a local or even an English architect had not been chosen, I was told this was “EU procurement”, the first piece of jargon I failed to comprehend.
The second was when I asked about the pool that was to replace Waterworld. The architect was unable to describe any fun facilities and repeatedly called it “a different offer”, pointing to a picture of a six -lane pool.
I said that we have swimming provision in and around York, but where was the promised leisure pool?
Hidden at the back of this picture there was a very small affair. What was that red and yellow bell-shaped object? He did not know what it was – his own drawing – but admitted there would be no slides, tyre ride, lazy river or wave machine The consultation was held over St Nicholas Fair, one of the busiest times of the year. Was the council really hoping to engage with the community?
I recommend people view the new designs online to decide if it is worth another £20 million over the original.
