A BETTING shop has submitted an application to expand its Selby town centre store into a listed building in the area.
The operators of the Betfred shop in the town have applied to change the use of currently empty stores in Finkle Street to relocate from the current premises in Micklegate.
A report submitted with the application said a newer, larger betting shop would benefit the area.
It said: "The proposal will enhance the vitality and viability of the town centre.
"The unit is currently vacant and therefore has a negative impact on the vitality and viability of the centre. The proposal will increase footfall and provide an opportunity for linked trips as well as contributing to the town centre’s evening economy."
The plans state there will be no changes to the outside of the building, but some alterations inside, that "do not impact upon the historic fabric of the listed building".
It said: "The proposed change of use will preserve the character of the conservation area by bringing a vacant unit back into use and sensitively refurbishing the listed building and ensuring its long term use."
The plans are now open to public consultation, and no support or objections have yet been raised.
A decision on the scheme will be made by the council's planning committee in the new year.
