CHILDREN have planted their own trees and flowers in a garden designed to help them understand the environment.

Pupils at St Barnabas CE Primary School took part in the Trees For Life project to plant bulbs and understand the finer details of the outdoors.

Teachers hope the children will take a greater interest in the project and look after it until they leave the Leeman Road school.

Karen Boardman, head teacher, said: "Developing our school site and giving the children an area for outdoor learning is quite important for us.

"We targeted it at one particular class so they can see the change in it throughout the year.

"They planted bulbs around the area and it helps them get to know the environment and how to protect it.

"The children have loved it. They have dug the ground, planted and got muddy, and because they've done this they will be inclined to look after it."
