THE BBC are killing creativity. BBC Yorkshire’s Look North is not reflecting the county that I know and love.

News that affects the county is important, but there’s far more to Yorkshire than doom and gloom. News, by its nature, can only be covered in a certain way – a straight-jacket. Despite having the best regional presenters nationally and talented reporters, the programme seems formulated and predictable and is killing creativity. I want to see beautifully shot, edited and directed five to ten-minute crafted magazine items that reflect the soul of Yorkshire and its people.

I feel sorry for the local management as their hands are tied going down this dreary cloned path by BBC management in Nations and Regions, who decided on this policy and using video journalists with domestic cameras, as well as reducing all location items to one-and-a-half minutes.

This is not good journalism. What about all the creative talented students on the filming side who cannot now get a foothold into the television industry?

Unbelievably, the BBC seems to be technically illiterate as some output looks like 405 lines. Switch to BBC2 and Strictly’s It Takes Two during Look North to observe the difference – even in SD.

HD television camerawork is now exceptional in wild-life, light entertainment and drama – sadly everything apart from BBC programmes that come under writing journalists’ control.
