A CANCER charity has received a sizeable cash donation after thousands of people turned out to see a street light up.
The £1,052 for Macmillan Cancer Care was made when 3,000 people attended Bishopthorpe Road's Christmas lights switch on last month.
Bishy Road Traders Association sold its unique Bishy Brew alcohol and visitors donated cash on the night, which also included a street party, to compile the total.
The event was the latest in a series of successes this year, including a visit from the Tour de France and being named one of Britain's best high streets.
Johnny Hayes, chairman of the association, said: "The charity was one of the groups running a stall on the evening and it was agreed by the association that they would come out as the chosen charity.
"It's great to run these events, make a profit and be able to give it to charity as well."
