MAJOR plans for new leisure facilities in Selby have been unveiled.

A submission to Selby District Council’s planning committee details a leisure village proposal, which will be built alongside the new Scott Road leisure centre when it opens next year.

If given the go-ahead, the site will include an indoor ski slope, a five-lane ten-pin bowling alley, an indoor skate and BMX park, an indoor adventure play area, and a high ropes area.

A report submitted to planners said the site would complement the more traditional sports facilities at the leisure centre, which include a six-lane 25m swimming pool and a learner pool, a studio gym, sauna and steam rooms and an outdoor all-weather sports pitch.

The developers’ report said: “The proposal is centred on the establishment of an innovative and exciting leisure offering focused on increasing participation within the prime young person target group, whilst also providing a coordinated family attraction for the site.

“The Leisure Village development primarily offering activities focused at the 0 to 24 year age ranges. The exceptions are the ten-pin bowling and the climbing activities that extend their age profile to the adult catchment.”

The report said the new site would include a similar-sized building to the new leisure centre, and help create a “destination that attracts repeat visits from the district”, and increase outside visitors from around the region.

The report suggests Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, which runs leisure services for Selby District Council, including the leisure centre, would be involved in running the new facility.

It said: “The relationship between the existing leisure centre and the Leisure village is critical to the success of the leisure village aspiration. WLCT involvement in both projects would ensure a coordinated programme of activity is established, supported by an efficient and cost effective operational model.”

A decision is expected on the plans in February.
