A CAMPAIGN has been launched to help victims of domestic abuse in York.
North Yorkshire Police, the Independent Domestic Abuse Service (IDAS), City of York Council and York City Football Club have backed the White Ribbon campaign.
The campaign - with advertising throughout the city on First buses and in York City programmes throughout the festive period - aims to raise awareness of domestic abuse, which research shows increased in York last December by more than 7.5 per cent, and how people can report it.
Sophie McGill, York City director, said: "We are pleased to support this important initiative tackling the issue of domestic abuse.
"We hope to play our part in promoting the clear message that domestic abuse, either physical or psychological, should not be tolerated.
"Through the adverts we will be running in our match programme and on our official website over the Christmas period, we will be raising the profile of this serious issue and also providing contact details where victims can seek help and advice. Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone and no one should have to live in fear."
Sarah Hill, director of IDAS in York, said: "Christmas is a lovely time of the year for most people, but for those living in an abusive relationship it can be a nightmare.
"Where relationships are already abusive, Christmas can bring additional pressures caused by financial stresses and alcohol misuse.
"We make a plea for people to seek our support if they are worried that their relationship might be abusive – be it physical, emotional or financial. We can offer support, advice and emergency accommodation and our helpline is free and confidential so please do get in touch."
Cllr Tracey Simpson-Laing, deputy leader of City of York Council, said: "Our message to victims of domestic abuse this Christmas is please understand that you are not to blame and that domestic abuse in any form is totally unacceptable. For your sake and your family's sake, please get help immediately from the many organisations which can offer immediate help and long term support.
"Domestic abuse destroys families and has a lasting effect on its victims and their children so the sooner you report it, the sooner you can get help and begin to rebuild your life. If your safety or your family's safety is threatened, always call 999."
