THROUGH your pages, may I send a message to the person who damaged my car on the evening of December 3.

It was parked mostly off the road, in a well-lit area outside the Love to Eat Café in Dringhouses/ Woodthorpe while I was leading a community event inside. Between 7pm and 9pm, someone drove their own vehicle too close to mine, putting quite a sizeable dent in the driver’s side door.

This person cannot have been unaware of the collision, and will have realised that they had hit another car. Quite possibly, their own vehicle was damaged too.

This person was also probably unobserved, because s/he did not stop and saw no reason to leave a message of apology or any contact details.

But not to worry, eh? If you can get away with something, why should you bother to be honest and own up? Politicians and bankers do it, after all. Luckily, Christmas will soon be here – maybe the perpetrator is planning to play Santa and bring me a new car (or at least, a new door)? Or a contribution to the repair?

If they feel their conscience stirred at all, perhaps they could leave details at the café – even an anonymous donation would be acceptable. The cafe owner knows who I am.
