1) THREE beers brewed with ingredients from Bishopthorpe Road in York have gone on sale in bottles. The ales, created by Stu Small from Little Brew in conjunction with local traders, were initially created for the switch-on of the street’s Christmas lights. The beers are York Honey Gold, Coffee and Cinnamon Red and Parkin Porter. Mr Small said: “People were queueing up the street to try it, and we had loads of inquiries about buying Bishy Brew bottles as Christmas gifts.” The gift packs of bottles will be available at a stall outside Lal Quila from noon to 4pm on Saturday.

 

2) PASSERS-BY and people living in the South Bank area of York are invited to “Follow the star” to Southlands Methodist Church, in Bishopthorpe Road, for community carol-singing on Saturday. There will be two opportunities to take part – from 11am to noon and from 1.30pm to 2.30pm – and lunches, provided by the church’s catering team, will be on sale between noon and 1.30pm. The church will be open from 10am for coffees, teas and squash, and visitors will be able to view a display of Nativity sets and make purchases from various Christmas stalls.

 

3)  A YORK charity is extending its programme of Christmas activities for homeless people following donations from house sales. Housebuilder David Wilson Homes offered to donate £50 from every house reservation throughout November to Arc Light. The money raised is being used to offer festive activities for homeless people in York and to prolong the charity’s Active Learning programme. An Arc Light spokesman said: “We are delighted to receive David Wilson Homes’ generous support. The money will help us provide the basic essentials to the local homeless community over the festive period and since education is an effective way to help people escape poverty, an increase in funds for the Active Learning programme is really great news.”

 

4) A VILLAGE shop is to be re-opened in York by local schoolchildren following a £395,000 investment. The Co-operative Food store in Heworth’s East Parade will reopen its doors today at 10am with help from pupils from Tang Hall Primary School. The in-store bakery has been increased, and staff at the store have undergone additional training, with the new look shop also featuring an extended range. Claire Lotto, store manager, said: “I’m excited about welcoming shoppers into the new store. The Co-operative is a community retailer, and we are committed to playing an active role in local life, embracing the area’s community spirit.”The store has a “community pioneer”, Karén Reynolds, appointed to foster a strong involvement in community activity.

 

5) THIEVES stole equipment worth more than £2,000 from a York garage. Tools, a racing bike, fishing equipment and a set of ladies’ golf clubs were stolen from the garage on the Burn Estate in Huntington overnight on Monday. 6) AN East Yorkshire golf club has been named Golf Club of the Year at a national awards ceremony. Based at Kilnwick Percy, near Pocklington, the KP picked up the title at the Club Mirror Awards 2014, which celebrates clubs of all types, including social and sporting clubs. The club’s director of golf, Ashley Pheasant, said The KP, which opened in 1995, was named the top club out of 1,000 clubs nationwide which entered. He said: “This is a very proud moment for all of us at The KP. “This has been a great team effort and a wonderful reward for all the work put in throughout the year.”

 

7) A CAROL service featuring the choir of the All Saints School will take place at the Holy Trinity Church in Micklegate, York, at 6pm on next Wednesday, December 17.

 

8) FIREFIGHTERS were called yesterday afternoon to a van fire on Foss Islands Road, in York. A crew from York went to the scene, and used one hose reel jet to put out a small carpet fire in the cab of a Vauxhall Astra van, which they believe was started by an overheating fan.
