TWO thousand volunteers have been recruited to welcome spectators to the first ever Tour de Yorkshire international cycle race in May.
The tour makers will help greet up to a million spectators who are expected to turn out for the three stages of the race as it weaves its way through the region.
Nearly 10,000 volunteers welcomed more than three million spectators from all over the world for last year’s Grand Départ stage of the Tour de France.
Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said he was delighted to welcome back some of those volunteers to help ensure the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire is a fantastic event.
The tour makers have already completed a training programme for the Grand Départ but will now have some additional training from West Yorkshire Police at their headquarters in Wakefield over the next couple of months.
A special training programme has been developed for this by Sheffield Hallam University.
Stage one of the race, on Friday, May 1, will start in Bridlington and finish in Scarborough; stage two, on the Saturday, will start in Selby and finish in York; and stage three, on the Sunday, will start in Wakefield and finish in Leeds.
