THOSE of you with a mathematical head may know that today is Pi Day: a yearly celebration to mark the mathematical constant of pi.
Pi Day is observed on 3/14, in the American month/day date format, since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three digits of pi in the decimal form. If you live over this side of the Pond however it is 14/3 and the whole idea is scuppered.
So why not have a pie day instead, what could be more British (and more tasty) than that? I've picked three reds that will match up to some favourite meat-filled offerings.
With shepherd's pie try a rich and smooth, modern-tasting claret, Château Pey la Tour 2010, Bordeaux Supérieur. If you normally shy away from Bordeaux reds, in favour of New World wines, do give this a try.
Made mainly with merlot, it has a supple, mouth-filling structure, with notes of toasty oak, leather, chocolate, spice and up-front flavours of plum and raspberry.
If game pie is on the menu then head to Spain and Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Priorat 2011, which would make a very good partner. A blend of grenache, syrah and carignan, it's made for the supermarket by the Cellers Unió co-operative.
Rich and velvety textured, it is very well balanced, touting flavours of brambles, raspberries and vanilla held together by some supple tannins.
Or with steak pie, head to Victoria in Oz and the delightfully named La La Land Malbec 2013, which is relatively new in at Majestic.
Full-bodied, structured and smooth, its approachable black cherry and bramble fruitiness balance nicely with spices, hints of dark chocolate and some toasty oak notes.
Château Pey la Tour 2010, Bordeaux Supérieur, £10.50 from The Wine Society 18/20
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Priorat 2011, £10 from Sainsbury's 18/20
La La Land Malbec 2013 Murray Darling, Victoria, £8.99 when you buy two at Majestic 17/20
