A LOVING husband has nominated his wife for a Community Pride award.
George Chaney, 85, of Whitethorn Close, Huntington, put forward his wife Joyce, 84, for the Fundraiser of the Year prize because "she deserves one".
Mr Chaney says his wife has, for the past six years, spent hours each week making homemade gift tags for the York Against Cancer charity shop in their village.
Mrs Chaney said: "It's for a good cause and I do it because I enjoy it."
However, there is also a more personal reason for her dedication to the local cancer charity, having lost a brother-in-law six years ago to the disease.
Her youngest daughter also contracted cancer but is in remission.
Mrs Chaney dedicates much of her time and effort to the charity shop so that other people whose lives are affected by the illness can be helped.
Donations to York Against Cancer help fund education programmes conducted in local schools to teach children about the contributing factors to cancer in early life, cancer research conducted at the University of York and care for cancer patients including transport, nurses and complementary therapy.
Mrs Chaney added: "I've been nominated before but I'm yet to win the award so it would be lovely to win it."
Although her devoted husband has nominated his wife, she insists they work together and he helps her cut out the tags from unsold cards, of which the local shops in the area, such as the bank and the chemist, donate to the couple.
Mrs Chaney has already made 1,000 tags this year which are sold at £1 for 20 in the shop, although she is anxious to beat her record of 2,160 tags set in 2012.
Last year’s winner, Phil Wiggins, received his award after challenging himself to run, cycle, and swim 4,000 miles between turning 40 and reaching his 41st birthday.
Altogether he raised more than £7,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
The awards are run by The Press and City of York Council, and the principle sponsor is the health insurance company Benenden based in Holgate, York. All nominees must live in, or contribute to life in, the City of York Council area.
There are categories recognising high-achieving sportspeople, loving parents, courageous children and hard-working members of the community.
Around three finalists from each category will be invited to an awards ceremony held at York Racecourse in the autumn, when the winners will be revealed.
You can make a nomination online at yorkpress.co.uk/communitypride/
Entries must be submitted by no later than Friday 17 July.
