DETECTIVES investigating the attempted robbery of two pensioners at a York beauty spot have exhausted all current lines of inquiry.

Carol Riddell, 71, was threatened as she walked with a friend at Clifton Backies, the beauty spot she used to visit with her partner of 16 years Doug Heald, on February 25 - just days after his death.

Carol, of Burton Stone Lane, and her friend were threatened by a teenage mugger armed with a stick who demanded they hand over their bags, but he fled when the women bravely stood their ground.

Carol's daughter Mandy previously told The Press: "I was absolutely horrified.

"My blood ran cold thinking what could have happened to her. She wasn't in a mood to be messed with. She's got a strong will but could have gone terribly differently."

North Yorkshire Police launched a public appeal to track down the mugger and received a number of encouraging leads, but more than a month after the incident, say they have made no arrests.

A spokesman said: "Officers have carried out intensive inquiries to investigate the full circumstances surrounding this very worrying incident.

"This has included detailed analysis of CCTV footage in the area, forensic searches at the location and a media appeal to help identify a suspect which received an excellent response from local residents.

"Despite this considerable effort by the police and the community, nobody has been arrested in connection with the case and all current lines of inquiry have now been completed. However, if new information comes to light which offers fresh lines of inquiry to pursue, further investigative action will be taken."

The spokesman said the victim was being supported by officers throughout the investigation, and urged anyone with fresh information about the attempted robbery or identity of the suspect to contact them.

Anyone with information should phone 101, email sarah.scott@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
