STAR Wars fans will be pleased to note that the upcoming Bank Holiday falls on May 4. As will lovers of puns. I wouldn’t be Solo as to include any wordplay here of course; not unless you force me.

I am going to suggest some wines however, that would be brilliant with Bank Holiday barbecue grub. Despite the fact that “wines for the barbie” is something of a vinous cliché.

I am not picking wines to go with burgers smothered with, onions, cheese and barbecue sauce though. I think a bottle of beer is a better option for that. This week’s wine picks are too classy for burgers and bangers and would be much more suitable if salad, salmon and steak were on the menu.

With the salad, try Cleefs Classic Selection Chenin Blanc 2014.

I think chenin blanc has real crowd-pleasing potential and this is no exception. Beautifully crisp, like the salad should be, and nicely dry it doesn’t skimp on fruitiness.

There are peach flavours in abundance, pineapple and lemon too with a lick of honey on the finish.

If you think pink isn’t proper wine then try Chez Rocailleux Braucol Rosé 2013 which hails from the south west of France.

The red braucol grape is widely planted there and makes for wines with a zesty acidity.

This one would be spot on with salmon.

Refreshingly dry it suggests raspberry, redcurrant and under-ripe strawberry with some distinctly floral undertones.

Steaks are best with chunky, spicy reds and so, staying in the south of France, I have chosen Calmel & Joseph Les Terroirs Corbières 2011; a ripe offering made from syrah, grenache and carignan.

Brimming with forest fruit flavours, black pepper and fennel, it is quite long, well balanced and held together by some fine tannins.
