This is not merely a disc of hymns. For a start, they are sung, not by a choir, but by the solo tenor of Gordon Pullin, a former member of the Minster choir with an international reputation.
His lyric tone and impeccable diction make these 11 hymns a real pleasure in their own right. They are given imaginative, but never overbearing, accompaniments by Brian Findlay playing on five small mid-Suffolk organs.
The gilt on the gingerbread is Jonathan Lilley's playing (at Ely Cathedral) of composers' improvisations inspired by the hymns and interleaved with them.
Francis Jackson's East Acklam and Parry's thoughts on Rockingham (When I Survey) stand out, alongside Vaughan Williams's incomparable prelude on Rhosymedre. A great form of Spot the Tune!
