IBRAHIM Ferrer was the deliciously distinctive vocalist for the Buena Vista Social Club, the veteran Cubans whose music charmed the world.

When he died, at the age of 78, he was working on this collection of romantic bolero ballads.

The recording wasn't quite finished, but some deft weaving of demo tapes finished the job, and Mi Sueno stands as a poignant testament to a great talent.

The voice might not be as strong as it was, but there is so much warmth and integrity here that such deficiencies hardly show.

Although the music is old-fashioned, the arrangements are surprisingly modern in feel, with jagged guitar interruptions from Manuel Galban, and lyrical, jazzy piano from Roberto Fonseca.

The stand-out track, Melodia Del Rio, was in fact recorded by Ry Cooder in 1998, and features Ruben Gonzalez, another now extinguished Cuban star.
