I WAS astonished to read in The Press (April 3) that another golf course was being planned in the York area.
At least ten courses have been built within a 30-mile radius of York in the last 15 years and this has led to waiting lists virtually disappearing.
I understand that you can walk into all but two or three clubs in the York, Harrogate, Scarborough and Leeds areas whereas up to six or seven years ago it was common to have to wait three years at least to get into a club.
Recent English Golf Union figures show that 87 per cent of golf clubs in England now have vacancies and that is about 93,000 membership slots available at the present time.
In view of this, I hope the people behind the proposed new club at Rufforth are well aware of the financial problems likely to face them.
