A NORTH YORKSHIRE stately home is offering visitors a rare opportunity to see one of its most important monuments late this month.
Castle Howard, near Malton, is offering a guided tour of the Mausoleum on Thursday, April 19.
The spectacular monument, not normally open to the public, has intrigued visitors for generations.
Behind the impressive exterior is an imposing chapel, with a crypt below where generations of the Howard family have been buried.
The tour will also visit the interior of the Temple Of The Four Winds, also not normally open to the public.
Leading the tour will be Castle Howard's curator, Dr Christopher Ridgway, who said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to see at close hand two of England's finest architectural treasures. Not only are Vanbrugh's Temple and Hawksmoor's Mausoleum marvellous buildings, but they also tell a fascinating story about the beginnings of the famous Castle Howard landscape".
