YORK City Knights are set to make an official complaint to Gateshead Thunder and the Rugby Football League after their opening match of the Co-op National League Two season, at Kingston Park on Friday, went ahead without a doctor in attendance.

RFL rules state a doctor must be pitch-side at matches in case of a medical emergency. A public announcement was made midway through the game asking if there was a qualified doctor in the crowd, after Knights player Chris Spurr suffered a potentially serious ankle injury.

It is thought the appointed match doctor believed it was a 7.30pm kick-off.

It has not yet been confirmed whether Thunder took the decision for the game to continue or if it was on the advice of an RFL official.

Gateshead won Friday's match, and the Knights were looking to bounce back to winning ways at home to London Skolars today (ko 3pm).
